I believe design is a language. It is a language we all subliminally learned as we all grew up. Like any language, you can deliver a monotonous speech. I believe you can provide an award winning screen play, with just the language of design. No matter your product, the language is universal. It just needs to be crafted.

I have been attached to the hip with Photoshop since its inception. I may have been 10 years old, but it is how my story with “art” started. To say my experience with industries and clients is broad, is an understatement. Upon graduating with a BFA in Graphic Design from The Art Institute of Houston, I spent the next 5 years in Hollywood, California. I gained experience in many aspects of entertainment advertising, as well as running my own freelance game. Starting at the bottom, working as an intern at an independent production house, I eventually came into a lead design role. I created marketing and design campaigns geared toward acquiring investors for multi-million dollar films.

I began working with non-profit and semi-profits. Helping these companies launch into helping the world. It is something, I truly enjoy. In Houston, I began working with smaller start ups as clients. These companies were apps, medical, and energy. I provided full brand identities, marketing materials, front end designs, exhibits and brochures.

I then moved into an in-house senior designer role. I collaborate with a marketing team, that reaches around the globe. I don’t speak German or Mandarin, but my work does.

Creative & Art Direction

My main goal when working as a leader is letting the artist, copy writer, illustrators, photographers, you name it do their “thing.” We hire these talents to perform to their level and I see a lot of directors getting in the way. To be able to tie them all together though you need to have an understanding of what they are doing. I’ve had roles in print and digital production, interface design and print design. A design team is a chain and any link can break, if not tended to when in need. If you want to be great, make the person next to you great.

Design

With over 10 years of print design experience, I feel this is my bread and butter. My abilities in this realm includes many of the following:

  • Brand Identity – This includes various print materials like publications, brochures, stationary, books ect.
  • Page Layout – This includes various print materials like publications, brochures, stationary, books ect.
  • Typography – The ability to select the right fonts and the implementation of hierarchy.
  • Collateral – This includes packaging and other materials for marketing or sales use.
  • Other aspects such as photo retouching, color correction, pre press prep and finishing.
Creating front end designs that are ready to be coded on the back end

I am by no means a web developer, but it is no longer 2002. Hell, it’s not even 2012 anymore. The web is constantly evolving. There is no such thing as a “web designer” anymore. We work as a team. However, I understand how my designs relate to CSS; this includes typographic headers, paragraph styles / line heights, grid systems, color palettes and designs becoming responsive. I have the ability to fully create front end mockups, that are then coded on the back end for the developer, to fit responsive design.

Marketing

I came into offices and working with clients out of school with only design knowledge. I quickly learned that marketing is completely interwoven. We identify our audience and we develop at strategy that works within a brand. I strive to stay within our brand to fit an audience, but we push to create a fine line to be a leader of ingenuity. This strategy keeps you always on the forefront.

Exhibit and Displays

Creating a space for events can be key to your companies marketing strategy. I can create and develop displays that can be used once, or multiple times through out the year. I know the language and costs, when working with exhibit dealers.

Working With Outside Vendors

Working with contractors like web development teams, marketing, and printers is just an entity of the design field. Unless you’re a huge firm with an in house team this is just a nature of the process. My past experiences have given me the ability to hand off or work hand and hand to create beautiful projects.
